ACT MP Deborah Coddington has delivered a stinging attack on anti-gay Christian conservatives in the wake of the shocking conviction of former Christian Heritage leader Graham Capill on child rape charges. Coddington described Capill as an "evil, despicable human being" during her regular appearance on the Paul Holmes breakfast radio show last Wednesday. "It's just absolutely awful," she said. "Every time I hear one of these charismatic Christians stand up and preach family values and anti-homosexuality, and anti-civil union bill and all of this garbage that they start, I think – Graham Capill, and it just shows it all up for what it is." Even arch-homophobe John Banks had some harsh words for the former moralist on his Radio Pacific show, saying the public had lost faith in Christian politicians since it was revealed that "the last spiritual leader of Christian politics in this country is a convicted child rapist". Capill faces up to twenty years imprisonment on a series of child sex charges. During his decade-long tenure as leader of Christian Heritage, Capill made repeated links between paedophilia and homosexuality.
