New Zealand fans of lesbian literary idol Sarah Waters can snuggle up for the BBC adaptation of her acclaimed historical novel Fingersmith this month. The two-parter, featuring a teenage orphan, a vulnerable young heiress and the dastardly plot to defraud her, promises to be a Sunday-night sizzler for TVNZ: airing on TV1 on June 26 and July 2, it's the second lesbian story by Waters to feature on the small screen. (The first, Tipping the Velvet, was based on her first novel, whose title refers to an intimate act that the story describes.) Fingersmith, her third novel, was shortlisted for the Booker and Orange prizes. The New Zealand Herald described Waters, who is Welsh, as the "surprise hit" of the Auckland Writers Festival when she participated in 2001.
