Double guilty verdict in gay man's murder

Thu 9 Jun 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

Both men accused of murdering homeless Greymouth man James "Janis" Bamborough after allegedly saying they were going to get him because they didn't like "faggots" have been found guilty. The began its deliberations at noon today after a lewngthy trial. The double guilty verdict in the Greymnouth High Court this evening came after the judge instructed the jury that they were dealing with two separate cases simultaneously, despite each defendant blaming the other. The killers - Hayden McKenzie, 28, and Leighton Wilding, 38 - were active in the white supremacist Fourth Reich gang. McKenzie's lawyer Doug Taffs said Wilding was a "murderous thug" who killed Bamborough because he had embarrassed him at a party by giving him a cuddle in front of others. Taffs said that was the motive, because the Reich despised gays and coloured people. 54-year-old Bamborough was throttled then drowned in the Buller River in 1999.
