"Death threats preceded Janis's murder"

Wed 25 May 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

A woman has testified in court that she heard several threats to "waste" gay man James 'Janis' Bamborough at a party in Westport in 1999 and feared she would be next. Janis disappeared after the party and his body was found last year in a shallow grave near Denniston. The witness told the High Court that she felt intimidated as an aggressive Hayden McKenzie threatened Bamborough at the party. McKenzie and an associate, Leighton Brian Wilding, are jointly charged with Bamborough's murder. McKenzie has pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact but police claim that both men confessed to the murder to friends several times.
