Two former friends jointly charged with murdering an eccentric gay man on the West Coast have turned on each other in their court trial. James Bamborough, who preferred to be called Janis, disappeared after October 13, 1999. His body was found last September in a shallow grave near Denniston. Crown prosecutors alleged that Hayden Brent McKenzie and Leighton Brian Wilding killed Bamborough by strangling him and then holding his head under water. Both men have pleaded not guilty, but McKenzie admitted being an accessory after the fact. However, the prosecution says both men confessed to the killing to friends. In 2002, McKenzie was overheard saying that he had killed a "faggot" but when arrested last year he told police that he was present when Wilding killed Bamborough and that he only helped dispose of the body. Wilding's lawyer says McKenzie was solely responsible for the death. Wilding had helped McKenzie conceal the killing and dispose of the body, but that did not make him a killer, she said. Bamborough was described to the court as a 'flamboyant homosexual' who lived in his car with his two dogs. Although not physically aggressive, he was a heavy drinker.
