Greens: Gay marriage ban an "outrage"

Thu 5 May 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

The Green Party have labelled United Future MP Larry Baldock's bill to ban gay marriage as an "outrage", ruling out any support for its first vote in Parliament next week. "Baldock's bill is a blatant attempt to legislate for discrimination and homophobia in New Zealand and should be outright rejected," says the party's associate justice spokesperson, Metiria Turei. "This rightwing revisionist bill catapults our diverse and aware society back into the 19th century and no-one wants to follow." The Greens hope debate around gay marriage will continue, despite the civil union option being available. "Civil Unions have been an important step and a critical debate. Debate around gay marriage must continue so that we are always working to eleiminate discrimination from our law books," Turei says. "Baldock's bill is a means to suffocate debate and legislate for discrimination and prejudice."
