One of New Zealand's first same-sex civil union ceremonies is to be televised tonight at 7pm on Prime. West Auckland residents Steve Hay and Glenn Lewis appeared last night on Paul Holmes, discussing their seven-year relationship and their impending civil union, which will be shown on tonight's programme. Publicity for the programme is referring to it as a marriage, and the coverage has been remarkably upbeat and positive, although Holmes did make reference to which one of the couple would “wear the pants” during a radio promo for the show. Holmes says that civil unions are simply gay marriage by another name, but doesn't see any problem with that as long as the partners love each other. Lewis and Hay also featured in the NZ Herald earlier this week. "We're being recognised as a couple in the eyes of the law and that's a big thing," Lewis told the paper. Hay said prejudice against gay people had not disappeared, but the availability of civil unions to same-sex couples was a historic step.
