ACT MP slams "pervert government"

Thu 28 Apr 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

ACT MP Stephen Franks is being accused of political opportunism following an attack on the government last week, in which he called them perverts. Franks slammed the government for their enquiry into the police computer-porn scandal, saying he couldn't “stomach a pervert government attacking the police for porn” when they'd allowed underage prostitutes onto the streets. The “pervert” label comes hard on the heels of an ACT Party newsletter which claimed the government had a “secret homosexual agenda”, and an entire column by ACT deputy leader Muriel Newman on Labour's “gay agenda”. MP David Benson-Pope said Franks was entitled to his opinions, “strange though they may be. I cannot believe his ideas are so libertarian and anarchic that he endorses the dissemination of images involving indecent and criminal acts. I think he has allowed political opportunism to overtake common sense."
