Heroes not gone, just resting

Wed 6 Apr 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

1:20PM : Reports of the demise of the country's only gay rugby team, the Ponsonby Heroes, have been exaggerated. Heroes manager Gavin Hyde says the team have decided to take a year out from the Auckland club competition to build player numbers and assemble a large squad with the intention of rejoining the club scene in 2006. However, the team will not be entirely absent from the field this season. The weekend of 16-18 September has been set as the date for an inaugural trans-Tasman tri-team tournament between the Heroes, the Sydney Convicts and the Brisbane Hustlers, Australasia's three gay/gay friendly rugby teams. A schedule of friendly games will also be played throughout the season with the focus on warming up for and winning the tri-team tournament.
