Peron denies 'Unbound' connections

Sat 2 Apr 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

GayNZ.com contributor Jim Peron says an article published under his name twenty years ago that appears to defend sexual relationships between men and boys was rewritten and published without his permission. The article, Abused, carries a Jim Peron byline. In it, the author claims he was abused by his father as a child and sought the comfort of other men, and attacks gay political activists for excluding "boylovers" from the fight for equal rights. Abused appears within the pages of a paedophile journal called Unbound, which NZ First leader Winston Peters – who first made allegations about Peron's background under Parliamentary privilege several weeks ago – says was edited and published by Peron while he owned a bookstore in 1980s San Francisco. Peron, currently out of the country, denies that he is the editor of Unbound, although an email from a former regular contributor to the publication, Dr Frits Bernard, says that Peron was indeed its editor. ACT leader Rodney Hide, who resolutely defended Peron against Peters' original unsubstantiated allegations that Peron was a paedophile, has refused to back Peron against the Unbound claims, saying Peron must defend himself against them.
