Destiny moves to shut down web critic

Sat 2 Apr 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

The anti-gay Destiny Church is threatening legal action to shut down the website of one of its critics. The website is destinychurch.co.nz, and its owner "John Smith" says it is an information site "to help people to think for themselves". Destiny say it is too similar to their own site, destinychurch.org.nz, and that it breaches their trademark rights. "John Smith"'s site carries articles attacking the church's anti-gay stance and calling it a cult. He told the NZ Herald that is not his real name and he wishes to remain anonymous. Destiny officials are concerned that the site will mislead people looking for the real Destiny Church, however "Smith" says it is clear that his site is not the official church website. The political church's threat of legal action against "Smith" is ironic in light of their repeated attacks against the idea of hate speech legislation.
