HIV positive people remain missing from those the Ministry of Health will give priority to for access to full strength influenza vaccines. The standard vaccines imported from a french company for this winter have been found to have only a weak level of protection against the Wellington flu variant, likely to be dominant in New Zealand. People with HIV typically have compromised immune systems and less resistance to influenza and other diseases. The MOH has announced that children and the elderly will have first access to the still limited number of full strength top-up vaccines but the exact policy on who else will receive them has not been finalised yet. A spokesperson for the Ministry says it is working on developing "a strategy that will deliver to New Zealanders similar levels of protection as in previous years, using a range of vaccines.” NZ AIDS Foundation executive director Rachael leMesurier says the Foundation will, if necessary, make submissions to the MOH to ensure that HIV positive people are included on the priority list of vulnerable people who will be offered the full strength vaccine."
