Eating Out and Gay Boyfriend

Wed 9 Jun 2004 In: Movies

EATING OUT Dir: Q Allan Brocka, USA, 2004, Beta SP, 90 mins Preceded by: GAY BOYFRIEND Dir: Ryan McFaul laughing your arse off and feeling guilty for every second of doing so. The ending comes a little quickly, and more than a little neatly. The closing scene is probably the most disappointing, purely because of the strength of what has come before. But it's a rare thing for a movie to be both sexy, clever and entertaining, and this is Brocka's first feature film, made on a shoestring. An enjoyable first round, and very promising for the future. Where on earth did Gay Boyfriend come from? And why hasn't it been released as a single? Two starstruck teenage girls dream of boys that will snuggle and go shopping with them, camp it up and cry at romantic comedies. They're living in a dream world. Great for a laugh, but the smile fades when you remember there are actually people like this. Chris Banks - 9th June 2004
