The 2005 Hero Festival kicks off in Auckland this weekend with the Chocolate Fish Swim Meet and the ever-popular Big Gay Out in Coyle Park. Hero, now in its fifteenth year, is again without a parade, but the Hero Brand Management Group is not bothered, saying it's all about celebrating "re-affirmation". "While a parade is not in this year's Hero, a Hero "festival" is more reflective of current community trends, with events like the Big Gay Out being even more inclusive and embracing of the community at large,” says spokesman Keir Robertson. The Festival runs 12-27 February, encompassing a wide range of events from harbour cruises and dance parties to political debates.
