"Queer eye on a straight world" is the motto for one of the new gay TV shows funded by NZ On Air, and scheduled to replace the long-running Queer Nation on our screens this year. Derek Stuart, executive producer of Kiwifruit for Cream TV, says they want to cover a broad range of topics for the show, both serious and light-hearted, but especially want to tackle straight issues or topics from a gay perspective. "Essentially the world is predominantly straight, so we would like to look at things and say; this is how life exists in a straight world, how does that affect a gay person? What's a gay person's take on it?" he says. “For example, we might go to a Warriors game, and say; OK, as a gay person, how entertaining is this situation? What's the food like? Are the players' legs any good? How do they look in their uniforms? And you can take this approach through from things that are quite trivial to things that are quite serious issues.” No transmission date has yet been set for the ten-episode series, which is currently auditioning female presenters. A second gay TV programme produced by Bettina Hollings for Imagination TV has also been funded by NZ On Air and is scheduled to air around June. No further details are available at present, as the show is still in development.
