Wellington High School's principal has ignored protests by students wanting the Destiny Church removed from their school. A coalition of straight and gay students have been attempting since Destiny's Enough is Enough hate march to Parliament in August last year to stop their school renting its hall to Destiny for church services at weekends, to no avail. They have continued to protest and bring the issue to the attention of the media. Principal Prue Kelly refused a GayNZ.com request for an interview about the current situation at the school regarding Destiny, responding to our enquiry with a curt statement. “I don't really want to get involved in this,” she said. “It would be great if the gay and lesbian community chose another arena to fight with the Destiny Church.” Kelly says the church “have not affected the kids in any way”, and she will be meeting with church representatives again in March when the arrangement to use the hall expires. GayNZ.com asked Kelly whether any parents, staff, or board members had also expressed concern about Destiny's presence at the school, whether views as intolerant as Destiny's have any place in a public facility and if any of these issues would be raised with the church in March – our queries were ignored.
