Standing ovations for Beyer at Stilettoes

Mon 7 Jun 2004 In: Events

In a night of glamour, muscle and laughter the cream of Auckland's Drag divas were honoured at the annual Golden Stilettoes awards last night. Under the spotlights of the Crowne Plaza hotel and fueled by Kim Crawford Wines and Red Bull the highlight of the night was the awarding of a Lifetime Acheivement award to Georgina Beyer MP who for years as a chap then a post-op transgender donned glamorous frocks in Auckland. Beyer received two standing ovations, the first at the announcement of her award, the second coming after her impassioned speech deploring the comments by new Anglican Archbishop Vercoe that he dreamed of a world without gays. (See news story.) More FM newsreader Deb Stannaway MC'd the evening, assisted (and more frequently hindered) by Miss K and overseas guest diva for the night, Polly Petrie of Sydney. Male strippers and show-stopping routines by Cindy (a knockout as Tina Turner) and Misty Blue rounded out the night. Winners in the various sections of the Golden Stilettoes awards included: Belle of the Ball: : Miss Ecstasy Best Hostess/MC: : Miss Ribena Community spirit: : Miss K Group: : Finale Best Duo: : Buffy and Bimbo Suptreme Award: : Davina Douche Up and Coming: : Ling Ling Best Lipsyncher: : Zoe Best Costume: : Miss Ribena Performer of the year: : Miss Kola Miss personality: : Miss Kola Best Drag Venue: Caluzzi. Judging for the evening was by ex-MP John Delamere, Charlotte Dawson and Georgina Beyer with input from online public voting at GayNZ.com. GayNZ.com - 7th June 2004
