Flesh temporarily homeless again

Mon 3 Jan 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

Auckland bar Flesh, devastated by a suspicious fire last week, is homeless once again after a temporary move to The Birdcage bar in Freeman's Bay has not worked out as planned. Flesh had planned to move to The Birdcage throughout the month of January until the re-opening of the O'Connell St location on Auckland anniversary weekend at the end of the month, but noise control issues which surfaced during the New Year's Eve party have shown The Birdcage to be an unsuitable location for a pumping gay nightclub. Noise control were called to the bar in the early hours of New Year's morning when noise levels from the outdoor dancefloor got too much for nearby residents. The news will come as a disappointment for some patrons, who contacted GayNZ.com to say they hoped Flesh might consider a permanent move to the Freeman's Bay location. Flesh's resident DJ Love says staff "have mostly got over the shock" of the blaze, and intensive clean-up work at O'Connell St is currently underway. Management are taking the opportunity to carry out renovations, with plans to install verandahs. Flesh is currently looking for new temporary premises for January, and concentrating on promoting a series of one-off events – including a beach party at Mission Bay on 16 January – to keep punters interest up until the re-opening.
