Calls to fire tranny granny rejected

Wed 22 Dec 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

Attorney-General Margaret Wilson has rejected calls for “tranny granny” Jacquie Grant to be fired from her recently-appointed position at the Human Rights Tribunal. The far-right Christian lobby group Campaign Against Civil Unions – still in operation despite the successful passage of the Civil Union Bill – made a formal complaint to the Attorney-General after they received angrily-worded emails from Ms Grant expressing her disgust at the content of their website, which vilified gays and lesbians. Campaign spokesman Garnet Milne says the Attorney-General could not establish a case of misconduct to lead to Ms Grant's dismissal as there was no evidence that Grant had displayed any "moral turpitude". "...to use one's statutory position as a member of the Human Rights Review Tribunal to threaten New Zealanders who are merely exercising freedom of speech, and who have committed no crime, is an abuse of that position,” says Milne. “At the same time Grant has threatened to pursue us because we have spoken out against human depravity, homosexuality being an example of that depravity as is clearly implied in the Bible (1Cor. 6.9)!"
