Gay men shouldn't hold their breath waiting for a cure for HIV/AIDS, says the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. Talk of a cure for the disease has surfaced again in the wake of a documentary screened on TV3 last night, The Hunt For The AIDS Vaccine. "The world has been talking about an AIDS vaccine in the next ten years, for about ten years. (i.e. tomorrow never comes)," says NZAF Communications Director Steve Attwood. "Recent major human trails of vaccines have failed to provide any meaningful protection. Some of the best brains in the business suspect that an effective vaccine will never be found." The Foundation says condoms are still the best prevention method. "They work far better at preventing HIV than anything else we have, better, in fact, than the TB vaccine is at preventing TB," says Attwood.
