MP Paul Adams displayed a breathtaking ignorance of modern science in Parliament yesterday with a declaration that he was unaware of any cases where children had been born with their gender unclear. He also said he was unaware of any parents with newborn babies who announced the proud birth of a gay or lesbian child. Being gay was a choice, he said, and that he knew people who had “come out of it”. Adams, currently on a 21-day fast calling for God's help in stopping the Civil Union Bill, is perhaps beginning to feel the hallucinatory effects of going without food for extended periods. In last Saturday's Herald, he claimed MP Tim Barnett said on Radio Pacific that the Civil Union Bill was “a continuation of the homosexual agenda and they have work to do”. “I have never used the phrase "homosexual agenda" to my knowledge, and indeed I think this legislation does (with the exception of adoption) virtually complete the work for equal rights under the law,” Barnett responded. “Paul Adams cogency has undoubtedly been affected for the worse by his fast. The sooner we get this law through, the sooner he can eat again!"
