Pansy wine crosses Tasman

Sat 13 Nov 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

Kim Crawford's 'Pansy' rose wine, launched in New Zealand two years ago and targeted at the gay community, has crossed the Tasman after demand from Sydney-siders. Winemaker Erica Crawford says the company wants to have "Pansy" on the shelves in time for Mardi Gras so that gays from other countries can discover it. The word 'pansy' is still a derogatory term for gay men, although not as popular as it once was. Crawford said the wine's label was intended to be "tongue-in-cheek", and was originally devised as a way of thanking gay friends in the hospitality industry who have supported the company's other brands.
