Antigay religious conservatives could have big say in next year's general election if they managed to mobilize together, according to Massey University's Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Peter Lineham. Commenting on the re-election in the US of President George W Bush on the back of the evangelical Christian vote, Lineham says there are larger number of these conservatives in New Zealand, but they are unlikely to have as much effect as their US cousins. He says the number of New Zealanders who form views based on their conservative Christian values is higher than most people recognise. He says estimates would put the number of people who are moral conservatives somewhere between 10 and 20 percent.
