Hubbard in, Banks out, Hay on ARC

Sat 9 Oct 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

Gay-friendly Auckland mayoral candidate Dick Hubbard has taken out the homo-dubious encumbant John Banks in the local body elections by a margin of roughly 17,000 votes. At a press conference given at 3pm today, Banks put his defeat down to a nationwide trend of centre-left voting by the public. But while voters have succeeded in ejecting one nasty lolly from the local body chocolate box, a second has slipped through to the second tray – former Deputy Mayor of Auckland, the virulently anti-gay David Hay, has been elected to the Auckland Regional Council.
