Gay-friendly sitting mayors Bob Harvey of Waitakere City and Tim Shadbolt in Invercargill have been returned by huge margins. Harvey polled 23,515 votes, almost double his nearest challenger, to take a fifth term. Shadbolt, another social progressive since his student days who is an ex-mayor of Waitakere City received five times as many votes as his challenger.
