NZ Herald readers have hit back at former beauty queen Sharee Adams proclamation that the Civil Union Bill would undermine society. Former Miss New Zealand Adams, daughter of United Future MP Paul Adams, said she didn't understand why legislation was only being introduced for such a small minority, that discrimination against gay and defacto couples was alright because "all laws discriminate against someone”, and that politicians would be "dead in your graves pushing up the pansies and we will be reaping the effects of what this bill will bring”. Her submission to the select committee on civil unions, which the Herald reported in a headline reading “Beauty queen hammers legislative attack on the family”, took up most of the front page. Readers of the younger generation whom Adams purported to represent were outraged that she was speaking on their behalf. “While I appreciate Sharee Adams' concern for my welfare, I suggest that in future she limit her pronouncements to more conventional beauty queen fare – saving the dolphins perhaps?” wrote Tobias Hasque. “I can tell your readers I vehemently support the Civil Union Bill,” wrote Graeme Tuckett. “I will now go and practise folding my arms and pouting as I await the imminent arrivial of your photographer.” “Sharee Adams lame dismissal of her fellows as the ‘whatever' generation is an insulting generalization,” wrote Wakefield Harper. “Many young people, including Christian young people such as myself, heartily endorse the Civil Union Bill."
