0900 polls poor example of public feeling

The One News Insight poll on whether gay families are real families shows us little about what New Zealanders really think on the issue, and a lot more about how well organized lobby groups are, according to an Auckland University statistics expert. Last week's One News Insight programme asked the question "Are gay-parented families real families?" and invited viewers to phone in on an 0900 number to vote, with each call costing 99 cents. 66% of respondents answered "no" to the question, a response which United Future MP Murray Smith says shows New Zealanders are saying an emphatic "no" to social engineering. "People have simply had enough of having this Government's agenda being shoved down their throats. New Zealanders don't want their society changed by the stealth and hidden agendas of a minority," says Smith, who is currently sitting on the Justice
