First trans-Tasman gay rugby match

Thu 23 Sep 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

The first trans-Tasman gay rugby match is to be held this Saturday in Auckland between the Ponsonby Heroes and the Brisbane Hustlers. The Ponsonby Heroes was established as Auckland's gay rugby team in 1998 and has been playing in the local competition since then. The Brisbane Hustlers is a new team formed earlier this year and has played matches in its local competition and against the Sydney Convicts. Both teams are part of an increasing network of gay rugby teams throughout the world. IGRAB, the International Gay Rugby Association and Board, presently has 25 member teams from across North and South America, Australasia, and Europe - with several new teams also forming. Ponsonby Heroes' IGRAB delegate, Dean Knight, was recently elected chairman of IGRAB. Kick-off is at 12:30pm this Saturday 25 September at Warren Freer Park, Cornwallis St, St Lukes.
