Gays and lesbians and conception

Fri 28 May 2004 In: Features

Are you a single or lesbian woman who has conceived, or is thinking of conceiving, using a known or unknown donor or father? Are you a gay father or sperm donor? The Law Commission is holding meetings to obtain feedback on the issues arising from our discussion paper, New Issues in Legal Parenthood. In the paper we question whether the laws governing parenthood should be reformed to give adequate recognition to the spectrum of family arrangements in New Zealand society. Issues considered include: the information to be recorded on birth certificates; the place of agreements among adults about parental status and roles; how to allocate parental responsibilities and rights to those involved in the conception, birth and rearing of children; The paper can be accessed at www.lawcom.govt.nz. Meetings for lesbians are Auckland: Wednesday 9th June, 6.30 – 8.30pm, St Columba Ctr, 40 Vermont St, Ponsonby. Wellington: Wednesday 16th June 5.30 – 7.30 pm, Law Commission, Level 10, 89 The Terrace. Christchurch: Wednesday 30th June 5.30 – 7.30 pm, Parish Hall, Holy Trinity Church, Lychgate Close, off Stanmore Rd, Avondale. Meeting for gay fathers / sperm donors are Auckland: Wednesday 9th June 6.30 – 8.30pm, NZ Aids Foundation, Level 1, 31-35 Hargreaves Street, Ponsonby. Wellington: Thursday, 17th June 5.30 – 7.30pm, Law Commission, Level 10, 89 The Terrace. Christchurch: Wednesday, 30th June, 12 – 1.30pm, Parish Hall, Holy Trinity Church, Lychgate Close, off Stanmore Rd, Avondale.
