Protests against Destiny in Wgtn and Dunedin

Mon 30 Aug 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

Around 80 protesters picketed outside a Destiny service in Dunedin yesterday, protesting the television church's stance on gays and lesbians. The majority of worshippers avoided the protesters, sneaking in through a side entrance despite the fact the protesters, who held placards and rainbow flags, were silent and did not block the entrance. “It was a really good show of solidarity,” says protester Nathan Brown. “It was very much sending a message to Pastor Gary and their congregation who would have been very much aware of what was happening.” Meanwhile in Wellington, six Victoria University students held placards in the bitter cold outside a Destiny service at Wellington high school. They were ignored by the churchgoers. Inside, Wellington High student Sonny Thomas, who has organized a 603-student petition protesting the hireage of his school's hall to the homophobic church, sat in silent protest at the back of the congregation, while Pastor Campbell Bond tried to distance himself and the church from Monday's 'Enough is Enough' hate march. "The Enough is Enough public stand is over," he preached. "We are not ... Christian activists."
