King rejects Destiny

Tue 24 Aug 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

The Destiny Church is continuing to invoke the name and ideology of the late civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King, despite having a request for endorsement officially rejected. Destiny has been quoting Dr King as part of its Enough is Enough hate rallies. The King Centre responded to Destiny's request with the following reply: "Greetings. Unfortunately, we cannot issue a statement regarding this (event). On top of that, one of Dr. King's closest advisors (Bayard Rustin) was gay and Dr. King did not believe in what was done to him and how he was treated here in the US at the time. For these reasons and many more we cannot issue any sort of statement that would condone putting someone else's spirit and dignity down in favour of another. " Dr King's widow, Coretta Scott King, is a strong supporter of rights for gay and lesbian people. "I appeal to everyone who believes in Marin Luther King's dream to make room at the table of brother and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people."
