Long-time gay GP dies of cancer

Tue 24 Aug 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

One of New Zealand's long-time openly gay GPs, Dr Chris Thomas of Auckland, has died after a short struggle with cancer. For 25 years Thomas provided health care to a large number of gay and lesbian patients, including many dealing with HIV infection. He practiced at the Cairnhill Medical Centre in Epsom with another openly gay GP, Mike Pohl, but withdrew from his work only a month ago when a form of throat cancer was diagnosed. He is survived by his partner, Murray Smallfield. Chris Thomas' funeral will be held at 2pm this Thursday 26th August at St Andrews Anglican Church, Epsom.
