Destiny would make gays illegal

Tue 6 Jul 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

It's official – homosexuality would once again be illegal if Destiny Church political offshoot Destiny New Zealand came to power. Leader Richard Lewis said at the weekend that this was not among the party's policies but was certainly under consideration. Already part of the party's manifesto is a review of all sickness and invalid benefits to see if they could be justified. Although the party is at pains to explain they are separate from Brian Tamaki's church operation, Tamaki's brother is standing as a candidate for them at the next election and the party is getting behind Tamaki's plans for a rally outside Parliament in August which will demand politicians acknowledge God and affirm heterosexual marriage. Tamaki wants other churches to unite with him in opposition to the Government and "make a stand for family values, the institution of marriage and the wellbeing of children".
