Recognition for Hero rescuers

Fri 28 May 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

The six gay businesspeople who rescued Hero from its financial collapse in 2002 are to be recognized with a community service award. The Western Bays Community Board is to bestow a “Good Citizens Community Award” to the inaugural Hero Brand Management Group this Saturday. All six members of the Group, who had no prior connection to Hero when stepping in to resolve the debts, will be present to accept the award. "We were concerned that Hero, which has been an icon of the gay community for many years might be lost and we wanted to stop it from disappearing,” says a group spokesperson. “There is still much that Hero can do in helping shape and reflect the lives of GLBT people and its satisfying to know that we were able to help free it up to continue…it's also nice to see at least one part of the Auckland City Council in touch with and appreciating the GLBT part of its community."
