Thu 13 May 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

An American transgender academic, activist and film-maker is to give public lecture at the University of Auckland next Wednesday. Dr Susan Stryker, award-winning documentary maker, world-renowned transgender theorist and historian of sexuality will present a rough cut from her forthcoming feature-length documentary on the 1966 Compton's Cafeteria riot in San Francisco – the first known instance of collective gay/transgender resistance to social oppression in the United States. Until last year, she was also Executive Director of the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco and has written widely on the topic of sexuality and gender for both scholarly and mainstream audiences. The lecture will take place on Wednesday 19 May 2004 at 7.30pm, in Lecture Theatre 439, Engineering Building, 20 Symonds St, Auckland.
