United Future MP Gordon Copeland has told a prayer meeting in Parliament's banqueting hall that Christians need to pray that the Civil Unions bill will be defeated. Copeland said he will vote against the bill which would give legal recognition to defacto and same-sex relationships. He also expressed concern about the treatment the media had given to the Civil Unions issue, particularly what he perceives to be the anti-marriage slant of some talkback shows. “The institution of marriage predates the formation of the state. It is found in every culture, and elevated to sanctity in all the major world religions,” he said.
