MP Dunne rejects Civil Unions

Mon 29 Mar 2004 In: New Zealand Daily News

The bid to give same-sex couples legal relationship status has been attacked by United Future leader Peter Dunne. Dunne chose a forum run by conservative lobby group The Maxim Institute to launch his campaign against the Civil Union Bill, claiming the bill will create new laws that are an attack on the values of mainstream New Zealand. "This legislation is about one thing and one thing only, it is about extending the rights and privileges of marriage to same-sex couples, without calling it marriage." Around 300 people attended the forum at which Civil Unions, feminism and political correctness came under attack from speakers. The Civil Unions Bill is expected to come before Parliament in mid-May.
