Speights remove Georgina-joke billboard

Thu 6 Nov 2003 In: New Zealand Daily News

Speights beer is to remove one of its billboards in Masterton featuring a Georgina Beyer joke, after a complaint from the woman herself. The Kuripuni billboard shows Southern men discussing the merits of Speight's, claiming "Georgina drinks it" and is therefore "the perfect woman". Speight's head brewer David Meads said the advertisement was meant to be "tongue-in-cheek" and was not designed to offend Ms Beyer. He said Ms Beyer had been pretty good about the whole controversy. Ms Beyer said that the billboard, which she was not approached about for approval, did not accurately portray either her drinking habits or how she felt about alcohol and its possible abuse. Speights are sending her a consignment of beer and a Drizabone oilskin coat for "being a good sport".
