Murdered pensioner's sauna visits scrutinised

Tue 4 Nov 2003 In: New Zealand Daily News

A jury in Wellington was told yesterday that 72-year-old Johnny Walker had visited a gay sauna the night before he was bashed to death in his home on 8 December last year. A man, whose name was suppressed, said he had been taking Mr Walker with him for the past 2-3 years when he went to a men's club in Wellington about twice a month. Explaining that the club had private booths for sex, he said that he had twice seen Mr Walker heading toward the booths with another man on their visits. 28-year-old Lee Bishell is on trial for Mr Walker's murder. He was a neighbour of Walker's and allegedly on P at the time. The Crown is alleging that Bishell stole Mr Walker's video recorder after the murder and tried to sell it to pay for the drug. Crown prosecutor Grant Burston told the jury last week that Bishell's flatmate had a key to Mr Walker's flat.
