A Wellington lesbian Presbyterian minister has defended the parenting skills of same-sex couples to a select committee considering the Care of Children bill. Representing her St Andrews on the Terrace parish, Mayman told the MPs that diversity in family relationships is already a reality in society. The Bill is designed to overhaul guardianship laws to extend equal recognition to defacto and same-sex parents but is opposed by right-wing religious groups including the United Future party which want to see married couples receive legal preferences.
