Creche children speak out against Ellis

Sun 17 Aug 2003 In: New Zealand Daily News

Two former Christchurch Civic Creche children, now aged 17, have broken their silence to repeat allegations that they were victims of satanic ritual abuse perpetuated by Peter Ellis. Speaking out in response to the testimonies published in newspapers and the internet by Barry Colman, “Tom” and “Katrina” said they felt betrayed, and wanted legal aid to allow them to appear before a parliamentary select committee later this month which will consider whether a royal commission of inquiry should be opened for the Ellis case. Lynley Hood, author of a book on the Ellis case, says that “Tom” and “Katrina” were the most manipulated of all of the children who gave evidence in the case, which resulted in Peter Ellis being convicted of 16 charges of sexual abuse. “Nobody has ever called the creche children liars," she said. "The techniques used [to interview the children] are known to induce false memories. Consequently, while their alleged memories may exist, they are anything but reliable."
