Transgender writer and research scientist John Thorp has been named as the victim of a train accident near Morrinsville on 23 March. John Thorp The New Zealand Herald reports that the 90-year-old was driving home from Waikato Hospital when his car collided with a train. His wife Hazel, who was also in the car at the time of the accident, is in a stable condition at Waikato Hospital. Thorp is known by many in the transgender community for his book A Change for Good in which he wrote of his transition from female to male in the early days of gender reassignment surgery. He transitioned with the support of his first wife Joan and the couple moved to New Zealand from the UK after being hounded by the media. Following Joan’s death, Thorp met his second wife Hazel in 1995, a love story also detailed in the book.
