Laurel Hubbard has made history at the Australian International weightlifting event, setting four unofficial national records and becoming the first transgender woman to represent New Zealand in the sport. Making her international debut at the competition in Melbourne over the weekend, the 39-year-old lifted a combined total of 268kg in the 90kg+ division. President of Olympic Weightlifting NZ, Garry Marshall, told the Herald earlier in March that Hubbard stands a good chance of being selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
