A council within MP Georgina Beyer's electorate has received its first application for a brothel, prompting cries of doom from conservatives before it has even been considered. The Masterton District Council confirmed it had received its first inquiry this week from a man looking at opening a “pleasure industry” business in the town. “They are marking the beginning of a dark chapter. We've got enough bad things in Masterton without this,” says Wairarapa-based NZ First MP Edwin Perry. Ms Beyer was not concerned by either the application, or the opposition to it, saying that she didn't believe Wairarapa's population would support a growing sex industry. “I would be surprised if such a business would thrive in an area like ours, but no doubt people may want to try.” Ms Beyer added that under the new law, communities and councils have a role in deciding where and if such businesses can be opened.
