A petition to improve the process for trans, intersex and gender diverse people to change gender on a birth certification has been heard by Government and Administration Committee at Parliament. Allyson Hamblett outside of Parliament after presenting her petition. Allyson Hamblett’s petition calls for changes to a birth certificate to be possible without the requirement for medical treatment and without the need to resort to a court process, and for a discussion to amend the Citizenship Act (1977) to ensure citizenship certificates that have been changed are legal. Hamblett spoke to the Government and Administration Committee at Parliament about her petition and says “The meeting was fantastic. I had half an hour to talk to my submission. “Ruth Dyson (chairperson of the Government and Administration Committee) said that it made sense to shift the process from the courts to the Department of Internal Affairs. They requested information about the issue in preparation for the meeting yesterday, but were amazed at the amount of info I knew on the subject - and they really understood the importance and the current legal struggle of the process. “I am hopeful for a good outcome.”
