Conchita Wurst character to be 'killed off'

Tue 14 Feb 2017 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Conchita Wurst, the bearded drag singer who won the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest is to be retired, according to her creator, Austrian Thomas Neuwirth. Speculation had been mounting on Wurst's future after Neuwirth had in recent times been performing her singing in a deeper voice than the more feminine tones audiences have been used to and photographs have shown her gradually shortening hair. Neuwirth says Wurst has outlived her intended life-span. “I feel like I want to create a new person… with the bearded lady, I have achieved everything I wanted since the Song Contest victory.” Addressing some confusion between Wurst and himself, Neuwirth told Gserman Die Welt magazine “I am and always will be Tom. I don’t want to be a woman. I love men, but as a man. … When I am dressed as Conchita, men don’t interest me. As a drag act, I feel completely asexual.
