Kissathon staged in Peru calls for equal rights

Tue 14 Feb 2017 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Hundreds of people have staged a ‘kissathon’ in Peru to call for equal rights for same-sex couples.   A call to action was made through social media for couples to simultaneously engage in prolonged kisses in the country’s capital, Lima. Same-sex marriage is not legal in Peru however recently a court ruled in favour of Peruvian activist Oscar Ugarteche, who sued for his marriage to his partner - which took place in Mexico - to be recognised in his home country. In 2016, nine people were killed in the country because of their gender or sexuality, however anti-LGBTI hate crimes are not considered as such in Peru as they are not recognised in the criminal code. The ‘kissathon’ has been criticised by the conservative sectors of Peruvian society, including the Catholic Church.
