With so many fabulous parties, shows and exhibitions, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that the Auckland Pride has a strong sports component. If you fancy yelling from the sidelines in support of your favourite team, or getting right in there and joining the action, here’s our run-down of sports events to jot down on your calendar. JX Live Touch Tournament Grab your mates and head down to Victoria Park to support the teams playing in this year’s touch tournament. Brought to you by the JX Live Charges, Total Touch and Proud to Play, this is sure to be a night full of action on the field. PLEASE NOTE: Originally scheduled for Friday 17 February, 5.30 - 8.30pm Victoria Park this event has been postponed until 5.00pm Friday 24 February due to wet field conditions. Pride Tennis Tournament For the fifth year running, the pride tennis tournament will see players compete in 20 minute doubles matches in a round robin format. With food, music and a cash bar, there’s plenty to keep you entertained on the day and with gorgeous views across Cox’s Day, this will definitely be a great evening out as the sun sets. Friday 17 February, 6 -10pm West End Tennis Club NZ Falcons Open Day Fancy yourself a bit of a rugby fan and wanting to get up close and personal with Auckland’s gay and inclusive men’s rugby team? An at the Ponsonby Rugby Club as the team kicks off the start of the 2017 season, there’ll be drinks, a BBQ and a chance to head out onto the field so be sure to bring your boots. Saturday 18 February 2 - 6pm Ponsonby Rugby Club Pride Surf Season Grab your board and wax and throw some togs in the car, if you consider yourself somewhat of a surfer, you’ll not want to miss the surf session out at Piha with the Gay Surfers. After working up a sweat there’ll be a shared lunch at a local beach house so be sure to pack a plate. Sunday 19 February, 10am - midday Piha Beach Labrys Women’s Softball Tournament It’s time for the annual women’s social softball tournament for lesbians and lesbian softballers. The tournament has been running for almost 20 years and was started by lesbian softballers, the Auckland Maidenz and the Wellington Amazons who joined forces to compete in the Amsterdam Gay Games. Call your mates and form a team before registrations close on Friday 17 February, all players of all abilities are welcome!
