A dawn ceremony at Western Park this morning kicked off the Auckland Pride Festival 2017. Around 70 people including participants gathered at 6am for the ceremony which included waiata, speeches of welcome and thanks and the calling out of names of glbti community people lost to the HIV epidemic. Muffins, scones and hot drinks were provided after the 45-minute long event which in past years has been held at Orakei Beach. A Gala show tonight at the Q Theatre will present a sampler of the festival's events which include theatre, dance, films, parties, visual ares an many other expressions of glbti culture. Also tonight at the Q Theatre loft is the opening night of the Carry On...-style show Camping featuring among the cast Chris Parker of Hudson and Halls Live! fame.
