Obama may reduce Manning's sentence

Fri 13 Jan 2017 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

US military whistleblower Private Chelsea Manning may be about to have her sentence reduced paving the way for her to be released early from military prison where she has twice to commit suicide. Chelsea Manning Manning received one of the US military's harshest prison sentences, 35 years, when in her 20s and before she had transitioned, for releasing a vast amount of secret military information to Wikileaks, in 2013. Despite eventually agreeing that Manning could undertake her transition whilst in prison and allowing medical treatments to be made available, US military officials still refuse to acknowledge her transition. Reports are emerging that outgoing President Barack Obama has Manning on his shortlist of people to pardon or have their sentences reduced, a prerogative of US presidents traditionally exercised in their last days in office.
